Cita previa extranjería: booking an appointment in 2026

Updated: 7 July 2026 · Verified by the EuroGarant team against official sources

We take on complex cases — even if you don't formally meet the requirements

We don't turn anyone away: we find the right permit type and route for your situation — including past refusals, non-standard documents and complicated circumstances. Money-back guarantee: we work under a contract, payment is staged and tied to results, and if your application is refused we refund our fees.

In short: a cita previa extranjería is a pre-booked appointment at a police comisaría or immigration office. Without it you cannot submit fingerprints for the TIE, obtain a NIE, provide biometrics or file an application in person. You can book online through the sede.administracion.gob.es portal — free of charge, but with nuances worth knowing in advance.

What a cita previa extranjería is and when you need one

A cita previa (literally "prior appointment") is a slot for a specific date and time at a government office. In the context of extranjería (immigration matters), it is required in several situations:

Where to book: which portal to use

Bookings are handled by different agencies, and their portals are often confused:

Portal What it's for Who runs it
icp.administracion.gob.es NIE, TIE (toma de huellas), residence permit renewal, expediente Ministerio del Interior / Policía Nacional
sede.administracion.gob.es Single entry point to government services — leads to the same booking service Administración General del Estado
Municipal portal Empadronamiento, certificado de convivencia Ayuntamiento (town hall)

For most extranjería tasks you need the first portal. The exact address of the booking page changes from time to time, so the safest route is via the single entry point sede.administracion.gob.es — not via links from chat groups or ads.

Step-by-step guide: how to book a cita previa

  1. Choose your province. On the icpplus page, select the autonomous community and the province where you live or where the comisaría you need is located.
  2. Choose the procedure (trámite). For example: "Policía-Toma de huellas (Expedición de tarjeta de identidad de extranjero)" for the TIE; "Policía-Asignación de NIE" to obtain a NIE.
  3. Enter your details. You will need your passport number (or NIE, if you already have one), first name, surname, email and phone. Make sure the details match your documents exactly — a single wrong letter can get you turned away at the counter.
  4. Choose a date and time. The system will show the available slots. In major cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia) slots get snapped up within minutes of a new window opening.
  5. Save the confirmation. A PDF with your booking code will arrive by email — print it or save it on your phone. Without it you may not be admitted.
  6. Arrive on time. Being even 5–10 minutes late can mean your appointment is cancelled — the policy depends on the specific office.
Prepare in advance: use our document checklist generator — it produces the full list for your permit type (DNV, NLV, arraigo, study, family reunification), taking your family composition into account.

Checklist: what to bring to your cita previa

The list depends on the procedure, but the core set is the same:

Waiting times in 2026

Cita previa waiting times vary widely by province and time of year:

City Typical wait (2026) Peak periods
Madrid 2–6 weeks September–November
Barcelona 3–8 weeks January–March, September
Valencia 1–4 weeks October–November
Málaga, Alicante 2–5 weeks April–May, October
Smaller provinces 3–10 days Rarely overloaded
Key deadline: you have only 1 month from the date of your residence permit decision to apply for the TIE. Book your slot the same day you see the approval — with waits of 6–8 weeks, there will simply be no "convenient moment" later.

Common mistakes when booking a cita previa

What to do if there are no free slots

A shortage of cita previa slots is a systemic problem in big cities. Several approaches that work:

Don't want to spend weeks hunting for slots? With our Turnkey package, we take the cita previa hunt off your hands: we track when new windows open, fill in the form with no transliteration errors and prepare the tasa for payment — all we need from you is your passport and a 32×26 mm photo. Payment in three stages: 50% upfront, another 25% once your file is submitted to the authorities, and the final 25% only after the result, when the TIE card is in your hands. Submit a request

FAQ on cita previa extranjería

Can I reschedule or cancel a cita previa?
Yes. The portal has a "Modificar / Anular cita" option — enter the code from your confirmation. It is better to cancel in advance than simply not show up: rebooking with the same passport is sometimes blocked for several days.
Do I need a cita previa to apply for arraigo social?
Arraigo social under RD 1155/2024 is filed at the Oficina de Extranjería — an appointment is required there too, but through the separate "Extranjería" trámite, not through the NIE/TIE police portal.
How much is the tasa for a NIE?
The tasa for NIE assignment under form 790-012 is 9,84 €. The tasa for issuing the TIE card is 16 €.
How long does it take to produce the TIE card after the toma de huellas?
Usually 30–45 days. Until you receive the card, the resguardo (fingerprint submission receipt) remains valid — it confirms your legal stay.
Can I show up without an appointment?
In most offices — no. Some comisarías in smaller towns allow walk-ins without a cita at certain hours, but this is the exception, not the rule.
How can I get a NIE through a consulate without travelling to Spain?
You can request a NIE through a Spanish consulate in your country of residence, or via a notarised power of attorney for a representative in Spain — no personal visit required. Read more: three ways to get a NIE.
