In short: two different things that are often confused. NIE is a number (a foreigner's identifier), TIE is a card (a plastic resident ID). The NIE is assigned once and is needed for almost everything; the TIE is issued to those who already hold a residence permit. Let's go through it step by step.
NIE — the number
Número de Identidad de Extranjero. A foreigner's personal identification number. Assigned once, never changes. Needed for a bank account, contracts, taxes, buying a home.
TIE — the card
Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. A physical resident card with your photo and fingerprint. It shows the same NIE number. It proves you hold a residence permit.
How the NIE differs from the TIE — in plain words
| NIE — number | TIE — card | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Like a taxpayer ID: simply a number the Spanish authorities know you by | A plastic ID card confirming resident status |
| Right to live in Spain | By itself it does not grant the right to live in the country | Confirms your current resident status (residence permit) and its validity period |
| How they are linked | The number on the TIE card is your NIE. In other words, the TIE "contains" the NIE, but not the other way around | |
Which comes first
- NIE — assigned first of all, needed already at the preparation stage: for the visa, bank account, contracts
- Type D visa and entry — based on your approved residence permit grounds
- TIE — issued once you are in Spain: within a month of entry you give fingerprints, and the card is ready a few weeks later
Why you need an NIE without a residence permit
You can get an NIE even without being a resident — it's just an identifier. You need it to:
How this relates to a residence permit
You can get a TIE only once your residence permit is approved. The card is valid for exactly the duration of your residence permit and is renewed together with it. So the path is always the same: choose the right basis → get a type D visa → enter Spain → apply for the TIE. If you're just getting started, see our guide "How to Get a Spain Residence Permit 2026".
