NIE and TIE in Spain: what they are and how they differ

Updated: 28 June 2026 · Verified by the EuroGarant team against official sources

We take on complex cases — even if your situation doesn't formally fit the requirements

We don't turn anyone away: we find the right basis and route for your situation — including past refusals, non-standard documents and complicated circumstances. Money-back guarantee: we work under a contract, payment is staged and tied to results, and if your application is refused we refund our service fees.

In short: two different things that are often confused. NIE is a number (a foreigner's identifier), TIE is a card (a plastic resident ID). The NIE is assigned once and is needed for almost everything; the TIE is issued to those who already hold a residence permit. Let's go through it step by step.

NIE — the number

Número de Identidad de Extranjero. A foreigner's personal identification number. Assigned once, never changes. Needed for a bank account, contracts, taxes, buying a home.

TIE — the card

Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. A physical resident card with your photo and fingerprint. It shows the same NIE number. It proves you hold a residence permit.

Oncethe NIE is assigned once — and never changes after that
1 monthafter entering on a type D visa — to give fingerprints for the TIE card
NIE = the number on the TIEthe TIE card shows the same NIE number you already have

How the NIE differs from the TIE — in plain words

NIE — numberTIE — card
What it is Like a taxpayer ID: simply a number the Spanish authorities know you by A plastic ID card confirming resident status
Right to live in Spain By itself it does not grant the right to live in the country Confirms your current resident status (residence permit) and its validity period
How they are linked The number on the TIE card is your NIE. In other words, the TIE "contains" the NIE, but not the other way around

Which comes first

  1. NIE — assigned first of all, needed already at the preparation stage: for the visa, bank account, contracts
  2. Type D visa and entry — based on your approved residence permit grounds
  3. TIE — issued once you are in Spain: within a month of entry you give fingerprints, and the card is ready a few weeks later
Easy to remember: first the number (NIE), then the status (residence permit), then the card that proves it (TIE).

Why you need an NIE without a residence permit

You can get an NIE even without being a resident — it's just an identifier. You need it to:

Buy property in Spain
Open a bank account
Register a business or become self-employed (autónomo)
Pay taxes, handle an inheritance, sign important contracts

How this relates to a residence permit

You can get a TIE only once your residence permit is approved. The card is valid for exactly the duration of your residence permit and is renewed together with it. So the path is always the same: choose the right basis → get a type D visa → enter Spain → apply for the TIE. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NIE and TIE?

NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a foreigner's personal identification number in Spain; it is assigned once and never changes. TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical plastic resident card issued to residence permit holders; it shows the same NIE number. NIE is a number, TIE is a card.

Which do you get first — NIE or TIE?

The NIE is assigned first — you need it for any legal or financial steps: opening a bank account, signing a contract, applying for a visa. The TIE comes later, after you enter Spain on a type D visa and your residence permit is approved: within a month of arrival you give fingerprints, and the card is issued a few weeks later.

Why do you need an NIE if you have no residence permit?

An NIE is required for most transactions in Spain even if you don't live there: buying property, opening a bank account, handling an inheritance, registering a business, paying taxes. You can obtain an NIE without being a resident — it is simply an identification number.

Are the TIE and a residence permit the same thing?

A residence permit is the status itself (the right to live in Spain legally on a specific basis). The TIE is the card that physically proves this status. You can only get a TIE once your residence permit is approved; the card is valid for the duration of the permit and is renewed together with it.
