When and How to Renew a Spanish Residence Permit?
Updated: 4 July 2026 · Verified against official sources
60 days before the expiry of your residence permit is the optimal moment to file a renewal application. The law also allows filing after expiry — within 90 days, but by then your TIE card (Spanish residence card) is technically expired and problems may arise when entering or leaving the country. The procedure largely mirrors the initial application: the same documents, the same income thresholds, the same office appointment (cita previa).
Key timeframes
| When you file | Status | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| 60 days before expiry | Ideal | None |
| Before the expiry date | On time | Minimal |
| Up to 90 days after expiry | Late, but allowed | Problems when crossing the border |
| After 90 days | Violation | Fine, possible entry ban |
What you need to prove when renewing
The key question at renewal is whether you still meet the conditions of your permit type. For example:
- NLV (no right to work): income from 2,400 €/month — more about the NLV.
- DNV (digital nomad): income from 2,760–2,850 €/month.
- Student: a valid agreement with an educational institution and funds from 600 €/month.
Income thresholds for every permit type can be checked quickly with the Income Calculator 2026.
Step-by-step renewal procedure
- Check your TIE card's expiry date — set a reminder 60 days before the "Válido hasta" date.
- Gather your documents: passport, current TIE card, photos 32×26 mm, empadronamiento (municipal registration), proof of income (bank statements, contracts), health insurance. Criminal record and medical certificates are valid for 90 days.
- Fill in the application form for your permit type and pay the tasa (government fee — check the official rate).
- Book a cita previa — via the Extranjería (immigration office) or Policía website. Slots open irregularly; watch for available appointments in advance.
- Submit your documents in person or through an authorised representative.
- Receive the decision. Once approved — book a toma de huellas (fingerprinting) appointment for the new TIE card; the card is produced within 30–45 days.
Important: avoid long absences
Extended absence from Spain can complicate renewal — especially if trips abroad add up. For future permanent residence after 5 years, the total permitted absence is no more than 10 months over the entire period.
